20C8 Grade Introduction:
20C8 is an unalloyed low carbon steel grade, commonly used for case hardening. When carburized, it exhibits a hard, wear-resistant surface with a core strength of 430-490 N/mm². 20C8 Heat Treatment:

20C8 Hardening:
Hardening of 20C8 is achieved by heating to 760-780°C, followed by quenching in water.
20C8 Tempering:
Tempering is recommended to relieve stress and achieve maximum case toughness. The tempering temperature typically ranges from 150-200°C.

20C8 Forging Properties:
For optimal forging results, soak 20C8 at 1177°C (2150°F) for 1 hour before forging. Avoid working below 1010°C (1850°F). After forging, post-work solution treatment is required for best results.
20C8 Stress Relieving:
Stress relieving of 20C8 is recommended after heavy machining or forming to eliminate residual stresses.
20C8 Normalizing:
Normalizing 20C8 involves heating to around 900°C and air cooling to improve its mechanical properties.
20C8 Annealing:
Annealing is performed at temperatures ranging from 800-850°C, followed by slow cooling to relieve stresses and soften the material for machining.
20C8 Machinability:
Characterized by long, gummy chips, 20C8 offers good machinability in its annealed state. For best results, parts should be machined in the H1150M condition, followed by post-machining solution treatment before final hardening.
20C8 Welding:
20C8 can be welded successfully using common fusion and resistance welding techniques. Oxyacetylene welding is not recommended. If necessary, AWS E/ER630 filler metal should be used for welding.
