Description
ASTM SA-36 Grade Introduction:
ASTM SA-36 is a widely used mild and hot-rolled steel known for its excellent welding properties. It is highly suitable for a variety of processes, including grinding, punching, tapping, drilling, and machining. Compared to cold-rolled C1018, ASTM SA-36 has a lower yield strength, which allows it to bend more easily. As a result, larger diameters of ASTM SA-36 are generally not produced since C1018 hot roll rounds are more commonly used for such applications.
ASTM SA-36 Grade Application:
ASTM SA-36 steel is extensively used in numerous applications, including:
- Bolted, riveted, or welded construction of bridges, buildings, and oil rigs.
- Tanks, bins, bearing plates, fixtures, rings, templates, jigs, sprockets, cams, gears, base plates, forgings, ornamental works, stakes, brackets, automotive and agricultural equipment, frames, and machinery parts.
- Flame-cut parts such as those used in parking garages, walkways, boat landing ramps, and trenches.

ASTM SA-36 Hardness:

ASTM SA-36 Heat Treatment:
- Heat treatment range: 1614°C – 1599°C
ASTM SA-36 Hardening:
- Hardening is done between 788°C – 816°C (1450°F-1500°F).
ASTM SA-36 Tempering:
ASTM SA-36 is a low-carbon steel that is not typically suitable for heat treatment. However, if hardening is required, heat to 880-910°C and then quench in water, followed by tempering.

ASTM SA-36 Forging Properties:
Preheat the steel slowly and then rapidly increase the temperature to the forging range. Cool slowly after forging.
ASTM SA-36 Stress Relieving:
Stress relieving is typically done at temperatures ranging from 677°C to 927°C (1250°F-1700°F).
ASTM SA-36 Normalizing:
Normalize at temperatures between 899°C and 954°C (1650°F-1750°F).
ASTM SA-36 Annealing:
Annealing is performed at 843°C to 871°C (1550°F-1600°F).
ASTM SA-36 Density:
- Density: 7.85 g/cm³ or 0.284 lb/in³
ASTM SA-36 Machinability:
The machinability rate of ASTM SA-36 is approximately 72%, with an average surface cutting feed rate of 120 ft/min. However, it is less machinable compared to AISI 1018 steel.
