Description
EN8M Grade Introduction:
EN8M (also known as 212M36) is a carbon manganese free-cutting steel, known for its good tensile strength and machinability. This steel is commonly supplied untreated and is used for manufacturing components that require good mechanical properties and ease of machining. EN8M can be surface-hardened to increase wear resistance, typically achieving hardness levels of 50-55 HRC through induction hardening. It is often used in applications such as gears, shafts, stressed pins, studs, bolts, and keys.
EN8M Grade Application:
EN8M is suitable for various applications that benefit from its good machinability and strength. Typical applications include:
- Gears
- Shafts
- Stressed pins
- Studs
- Bolts
- Keys
EN8M Equivalent Grades:

EN8M Hardness:
- Brinell Hardness: 201-255 HB
EN8M Heat Treatment:
EN8M can be heat-treated to improve its mechanical properties. The typical processes include:
- Hardening: Heat to 820-850°C, then quench in oil or water.
- Tempering: Reheat to 150-200°C, soak for a period, then cool in air.
EN8M Physical Properties:
- Density: Approx. 7.85 g/cm³
EN8M Thermal Properties:
- Thermal Conductivity: Typically around 50 W/m·K (depends on specific heat treatment and processing).
EN8M Forging Properties:
EN8M is suitable for forging operations. It can be forged at temperatures between 1150-850°C.
EN8M Stress Relieving:
Stress relieving is performed at 600-650°C followed by slow cooling to relieve internal stresses.
EN8M Normalizing:
Normalizing involves heating to 850-880°C and then cooling in air to refine the grain structure and improve mechanical properties.
EN8M Annealing:
Annealing is performed at 850-900°C followed by slow cooling to achieve improved machinability and reduce hardness.
EN8M Machinability:
EN8M is known for its excellent machinability due to its free-cutting nature. The leaded variant offers even better machinability.
EN8M Welding:
Welding EN8M is generally possible but may require preheating and post-weld heat treatment to avoid issues with hardening and cracking due to its carbon content.
