H11 Grade Steel Overview
H11 steel is a popular chromium-based hot-work tool steel classified under the AISI group H series, which ranges from H1 to H19. Known for its excellent toughness, resistance to thermal fatigue, and ability to retain strength at high temperatures, H11 steel is air-hardened and can be hardened in thick sections (up to 150 mm). Tools made from H11 steel can withstand cooling by water without sustaining damage due to its lower carbon and balanced alloy content.
We are a reliable supplier of AISI H11 tool steel, offering high-quality materials with prompt delivery. Contact us for competitive pricing on H11 steel bars, plates, and sheets.
H11 Steel Applications:
H11 alloy steel is primarily used in high-stress structural parts such as aircraft landing gear. Other common uses include:
- Hot punches
- Die casting dies
- Forging dies
- Hot shear blades
- Hot gripper dies
- Extrusion tooling

H11 Hardness:
- H11 tool steel can achieve a hardness of 57 HRC after heat treatment.
H11 Heat Treatment:
H11 can be heat treated through various schemes, including annealing, hardening/austenitizing, oil quenching, and double tempering. The recommended heat treatment for an optimal combination of hardness, toughness, yield strength, and ductility is oil-quenching followed by double tempering at 1020°F (550°C).
H11 Hardening:
H11 steel has excellent hardenability and is best hardened by cooling in still air. It is recommended to use salt baths or controlled atmosphere furnaces to minimize decarburization. The ideal hardening temperature is 1800°F-1850°F (982°C-1010°C).
H11 Tempering:
Tempering is performed at temperatures ranging from 538°C to 649°C (1000°F to 1200°F) to achieve a Rockwell C hardness between 38 and 54, depending on the tempering temperature. Double tempering is common, with each tempering cycle lasting an hour at the desired temperature.

Thermal Conductivity (@100ºC) | 42.2 W/mK | 292.9 in/hr.ft².°F |
H11 Forging Properties:
H11 steel should be forged at 1121°C (2050°F) and should not be forged below 899°C (1650°F).
H11 Machinability:
The machinability rate of H11 tool steel is around 75% compared to W group tool steels, making it moderately machinable.
H11 Welding:
Welding of H11 steel requires preheating and stress-relieving due to its high alloy content. It is recommended to preheat to 310-370°C to avoid hydrogen-induced cracking. Using TIG welding with Stellite 6 hardfacing can significantly improve the tool’s resistance to wear and increase its service life.
