MS Grade Introduction:
MS (Mild Steel) is a low carbon steel known for its excellent weldability, machinability, and ductility. It offers a good balance between toughness and strength, making it ideal for carburized parts where surface hardness and a soft core are desired. MS steel is often used in applications where alloy steels are not required due to its ease of forming, drilling, machining, and heat-treating properties.
MS Grade Application:
MS mild/low carbon steel is widely used for general engineering purposes, including:
- Carburized parts like gears, pins, dowels, machine components, and chain pins.
- Fixtures, mounting plates, and spacers.
- Forging and machining applications like brackets, tie rods, and studs.
- Automotive and non-critical components of tool and die sets.
- Fixtures and supports in construction and manufacturing industries.

MS Hardness:
Brinell hardness: 126 HB
MS Heat Treatment:
MS steel is commonly used in the as-forged condition, as its machinability is better in this state compared to the normalized condition. Quenching and tempering processes offer little benefit at this carbon content level.
MS Hardening:
To harden MS steel, heat it between 780°C – 820°C, then quench in water.
MS Tempering:
Tempering MS steel at 150°C – 200°C improves case toughness without significantly affecting hardness. This process also helps to reduce grinding cracks.

MS Forging Properties:
For forging, heat MS steel to 1150°C – 1280°C and hold until the temperature becomes uniform. Cool in air after forging.
MS Stress Relieving:
Heat MS steel to 500°C – 700°C to relieve internal stresses, then cool in air.
MS Normalizing:
Heat the steel to 890°C – 940°C, then cool in still air to normalize.
MS Annealing:
Anneal MS steel by heating to 870°C – 910°C and allowing it to cool in a furnace.
MS Density:
- Density: 7.87 g/cm³ (0.284 lb/in³)
MS Machinability:
MS steel offers 78% machinability relative to standard machinable grades like B1112.
MS Welding:
MS mild steel can be welded by all conventional welding processes without the need for pre-heating or post-heating. However, for sections over 50mm, pre-heating may improve weld quality. For carburized or carbonitrided sections, welding is not recommended.
