D2 Grade Introduction:
D2 steel is an air-hardening, high-carbon, high-chromium tool steel known for its exceptional wear and abrasion resistance. It is heat treatable and achieves a hardness range of 55-62 HRC. D2 steel demonstrates minimal distortion when properly hardened and offers mild corrosion resistance due to its high chromium content. This steel is ideal for applications requiring high wear resistance and toughness.

D2 Hardness:

  • Hardness: 62-63 HRC

D2 Heat Treatment:
Heat treatment processes for D2 steel include controlled heating, cooling, and soaking times based on component shape, size, and other factors.

D2 Hardening:
Heat D2 steel in a controlled atmosphere if possible. If not, use pack hardening. Preheat to 750-800°C, soak, then heat to 1000-1040°C for air cooling or 980°C for oil quenching. Soak for thirty minutes per 25mm of section and cool accordingly. Avoid exceeding 1040°C.

D2 Tempering:
Double tempering is recommended. Temper immediately after hardening, preferably while still warm. Heat slowly to the desired tempering temperature and soak for at least one hour per 25mm of section. Repeat the tempering process.

D2 Forging Properties:
Forge D2 steel between 1065°C (1950°F) and 954°C (1750°F). Avoid forging below 926°C (1700°F).

D2 Stress Relieving:
For heavily machined or ground D2 tools, perform stress relieving before hardening. Heat to 600-650°C, soak, and cool in the furnace or air. Finish machining before hardening.

D2 Normalizing:
Normalizing is generally avoided for high carbon high chromium steels due to potential distortion. Martensitic formation during furnace cooling renders normalizing unnecessary.

D2 Annealing:
D2 is supplied in an annealed and machinable condition. Re-anneal if the steel has been forged or hardened. Heat to 900°C, soak for 3-4 hours, and cool in the furnace. Reheat to 800-1040°C, soak again, and cool to room temperature.

D2 Density:

  • Density: 7.7 x 10³ kg/m³ (0.278 lb/in³)

D2 Machinability:
Machinability is approximately 50-60% of 1% carbon steel.

D2 Welding:
When welding D2 tool steel:

  • Ensure the weld matches the base hardness.
  • Use the lowest weld current and smallest electrode diameter.
  • Avoid weaving; use stringer beads.
  • Peen each weld after completion.
  • Keep parts clean and avoid excessive joint restraints.
