Description
SAE 8620 Grade Introduction:
SAE 8620 Alloy Steel is a low-alloy nickel, chromium, and molybdenum steel known for its high external strength and good internal strength, making it resistant to wear. Supplied in the as-rolled condition, SAE 8620 has a maximum hardness of HB 255. Its higher core strength compared to grades 8615 and 8617 makes it suitable for surface hardening. This steel is flexible during hardening treatments, allowing for enhanced case/core properties. Although prehardened and tempered 8620 can be nitrided, it is not suitable for flame or induction hardening due to its low carbon content.

SAE 8620 Hardness:
- Brinell Hardness: 149
SAE 8620 Heat Treatment:
- Harden by heating to 1500°F followed by a water quench.
- Carburize at 1650°F to 1700°F and quench in oil.
- Improved properties can be obtained by furnace cooling from 1650°F to 1700°F, followed by reheating to 1575°F.
SAE 8620 Hardening:
Austenitizing at 840°C-870°C followed by quenching in oil or water. Air or oil cooling depends on the section size.
SAE 8620 Tempering:
Heat-treated and water-quenched parts are tempered at 400°F to 1300°F to enhance case toughness without affecting hardness.

SAE 8620 Forging Properties:
Forging of SAE 8620 steel begins at 2250°F (1230°C) and ends at 1700°F (925°C), followed by air cooling.
SAE 8620 Stress Relieving:
Heat to 630°C-650°C, hold for 1 hour per 25mm section, and air cool.
SAE 8620 Normalizing:
Normalizing is performed at 1675°F (910°C) and air-cooled. This process improves machinability and is used prior to case hardening.
SAE 8620 Annealing:
Full annealing of SAE 8620 is carried out by heating to 820°C-850°C, followed by furnace cooling.
SAE 8620 Density:
- Density: 0.283 lb/cu. in.
SAE 8620 Machinability:
SAE 8620 is readily machinable after heat treatment. Minimal post-carburizing machining is advised to preserve the hardened case.
