EN31 Grade Introduction

EN31 is a high-strength steel alloy that is hardened and tempered to enhance its mechanical properties. With a composition of nickel, chromium, and molybdenum, EN31 exhibits high tensile strength, excellent ductility, and superior wear resistance. It maintains good impact properties at low temperatures and performs well in elevated temperature applications. EN31 round bars are known for their high internal and external strength, making them highly wear-resistant and ideal for demanding applications.

EN31 Heat Treatment

Heat treatment parameters, including heating rates, cooling, and soaking times, will vary based on the shape and size of the component. For precise guidelines, consult your heat treatment provider.

Hardening: Heat slowly to 800-820°C, soak thoroughly, and then quench in oil.

Tempering: Temper based on application requirements, typically between 150°C and 300°C. Soak for at least one hour per 25 mm of thickness and cool slowly in air.

EN31 Forging Properties

Heat slowly and begin forging at 1000-1050°C. Maintain temperature for thorough soaking. Avoid forging below 850°C. After forging, cool slowly, preferably in a furnace.

EN31 Stress Relieving

For parts that undergo heavy machining, stress-relieving is beneficial before hardening. Heat EN31 to 700°C, soak well, and cool in air.

EN31 Normalizing

Heat EN31 to 816°C and quench in oil. Prior to normalizing, heat to 872°C and cool slowly to reduce machining stress.

EN31 Annealing

Typically supplied in an annealed and machinable condition. Re-annealing is needed only if the steel has been forged or hardened. To anneal, heat to 800-810°C, soak well, and cool in the furnace.

EN31 Machinability

EN31 steel is used in the automobile industry and is challenging to machine precisely. Investigations focus on wire electrical discharge machining (WEDM) to understand how parameters like pulse on-time, servo voltage, wire feed, and wire tension affect surface characteristics. Lower pulse on-time and servo voltage generally reduce kerf width and edge roughness, though cutting rate varies with pulse on-time and servo voltage. Wire tension and feed impact edge roughness and kerf width differently.
