EN47 Grade Introduction:

EN47 Spring Steel is supplied in rolled condition and is suitable for oil hardening and tempering. It is known for combining spring characteristics with good wear and abrasion resistance when used in the oil-hardened and tempered condition. EN47 offers excellent toughness and shock resistance, making it ideal for parts exposed to stress, shock, and vibration. This alloy spring steel is commonly referred to as 51CrV4, 50CrV4, DIN 1.8159, or AISI 6150 in various standards across different countries.

EN47 is predominantly used for applications in tractors, heavy vehicles, larger plate springs, industrial production loads, and helical springs. Additionally, it is widely used in general engineering applications, especially where high shock resistance and toughness are required.

EN47 Mechanical Properties:

  • Hardening: 840-870°C

EN47 Heat Treatment:

The heat treatment process for EN47 involves heating the material to certain temperatures depending on factors like component shape and size. The process includes heating, cooling, and soaking, which vary based on the furnace type, quenching medium, and workpiece transfer facilities.

EN47 Hardening:

To harden EN47, heat slowly to 650-700°C and thoroughly soak the component. Continue heating to the final hardening temperature of 830-860°C. Quenching should be done in oil.

EN47 Tempering:

After quenching, the component should be tempered immediately while still warm. Reheat to the desired tempering temperature and soak for one hour per 25 mm of thickness (minimum 2 hours). Typical tempering temperatures for EN47 are between 400-600°C.

EN47 Forging Properties:

To forge EN47 spring steel, preheat the steel carefully, then raise the temperature to 1050°C. Avoid forging below 840°C. Cool slowly after forging, preferably in a furnace.

EN47 Annealing:

For annealing, heat slowly to 820-840°C, ensuring a thorough soak. Cool slowly within the furnace.
