EN8 Grade Introduction:

EN8 is an unalloyed medium carbon steel grade offering good tensile strength, typically supplied in cold-drawn or as-rolled conditions. Its tensile strength ranges from 500 to 800 N/mm², making it suitable for various engineering applications requiring higher strength than mild steel but not the cost of alloy steel. EN8 can be flame or induction hardened, providing moderate wear resistance and surface hardness. EN8 is available in bar stock and can be cut to size. Flame-cut plates can also be normalized and supplied as precision ground or surface ground.

EN8 Grade Application:

EN8 steel is commonly used in engineering applications that demand higher strength than mild steel, such as:

  • General-purpose axles and shafts
  • Gears, bolts, and studs
  • Spindles
  • Automotive and general engineering components
  • Other general engineering parts

EN8 Heat Treatment:

The temperatures and conditions for heat treatment of EN8 components vary depending on shape, size, and furnace type, along with quenching medium and transfer facilities.

EN8 Hardening:

Heat EN8 steel to 820-860°C, allowing it to heat thoroughly, followed by quenching in oil or water.

EN8 Tempering:

Tempering of EN8 steel should occur immediately after quenching. Reheat to the tempering temperature, soaking for one hour per 25mm of thickness (minimum 2 hours), and cool in air. Tempering temperatures for most applications range from 550-660°C.

EN8 Forging Properties:

Preheat slowly, then raise the temperature to 1050°C for forging. Avoid forging below 850°C. After forging, cool slowly, ideally in a furnace.

EN8 Stress Relieving:

Stress relieving eliminates residual stresses caused by machining, rolling, or welding. For carbon steels and alloy steels, two types of stress relief are applied:

  • Treatment at 150-200°C to relieve stresses after hardening without significantly reducing hardness.
  • Treatment at 600-680°C after welding or machining to ensure complete stress relief.

EN8 Normalizing:

Heat the steel to 1050°C for forging, ensuring complete heating. Avoid forging below 850°C. After forging, cool the EN8 steel slowly, preferably in a furnace.

EN8 Annealing:

Anneal EN8 steel by heating it slowly to 680-710°C, ensuring proper soaking, and cool it gradually in the furnace.

EN8 Machinability:

EN8 has good machinability but should be done carefully to avoid cracking.

EN8 Welding:

Modern EN8 steel with lower carbon content allows welding without preheating for thicknesses up to 18mm, using MIG wire or a 7018 electrode. Preheat thicker sections to 100°C to prevent cracking. Post-weld annealing is recommended to prevent breaking.
