EN8 Grade Introduction:
EN8 is a widely used medium carbon steel grade that offers reasonable tensile strength and is typically supplied in cold-drawn or as-rolled conditions. With tensile properties ranging from 500-800 N/mm², EN8 is ideal for applications requiring better properties than mild steel without the higher costs of alloy steel. EN8 can be flame or induction hardened to provide a hard surface with moderate wear resistance. It is available in various forms such as bars and plates, and can be customized and supplied cut to size.

EN8 exhibits Brinell hardness in the range of 152-255 HB.
EN8 Heat Treatment:
The heat treatment process for EN8 includes several steps, and exact times and temperatures depend on the component’s size and shape.
- Hardening: Heat slowly to 820-860°C, quench in oil or water for optimal hardness.
- Tempering: Reheat after quenching to 550-660°C, allowing 1 hour per 25 mm thickness for soaking, followed by air cooling.

EN8 Forging Properties:
Preheat the EN8 steel carefully, then raise the temperature to 1050°C for forging. Do not forge below 850°C and allow slow cooling, preferably in a furnace.
EN8 Stress Relieving:
Stress relieving is applied to remove residual stresses caused by processes like machining or welding. Treatment at 150-200°C reduces stress without significantly altering hardness. Alternatively, stress relief can be performed at 600-680°C for complete stress reduction, particularly after welding.
EN8 Normalizing:
Normalize EN8 by heating to 1050°C and then cooling in air. This process helps improve the mechanical properties and refines the grain structure.
EN8 Annealing:
Anneal by heating the steel to 680-710°C and allowing it to cool slowly in the furnace to achieve softness for further machining.
EN8 Machinability:
EN8 steel has good machinability, allowing ease of processing into various shapes and sizes.
EN8 Welding:
Modern EN8 steel contains less carbon than it used to, which means pieces up to 18mm thick can be welded without preheating using MIG wire (SG2) or a 7018 electrode. For sections over 18mm, preheating to 100°C (212°F) is necessary to prevent cracking. Post-weld annealing is recommended to prevent material failure.
