40C8 Grade Overview: 40C8 is a medium carbon steel that contains carbon as the primary alloying element, along with small amounts of silicon (up to 0.4%) and manganese (up to 1.2%). It also contains trace amounts of copper, molybdenum, aluminum, chromium, and nickel. This steel is often used in general engineering applications that require higher strength than mild steel, and it offers a balance of strength, toughness, and machinability.

Heat Treatment of 40C8:

  • Normalizing: Heat to 830-860°C, followed by air cooling.
  • Annealing: Heat between 680-710°C, then cool steadily.
  • Tempering: Temper at 550°C to 660°C to achieve the desired hardness and toughness.
