EN1A Leaded and Non-Leaded Grade Introduction:
EN1A is a popular low-carbon manganese free-cutting steel grade, ideal for manufacturing components that require precision and intricate machining operations. It is commonly used for high-production automatic turning components like nuts, bolts, studs, and hydraulic fittings. EN1A is available in two variants: leaded (EN1A Pb) and non-leaded. The leaded version improves machinability, producing small chips during machining, which helps prevent machine blockages. EN1A can also be case-hardened for applications requiring increased surface wear resistance.
EN1A Leaded and Non-Leaded Grade Applications:
EN1A steel is well-suited for applications prioritizing excellent machinability. It is primarily used for automatic lathes and capstan lathes for producing finely finished components. However, EN1A is not suitable for parts subjected to high stresses. It is also not ideal for hollow components exposed to internal pressures, which may stress the transverse yield strength. Case hardening can enhance the wear resistance of components but is not recommended for applications involving severe impact.

EN1A Leaded and Non-Leaded Heat Treatment:
Carbonization of EN1A bright mild steel takes place at 900-950°C, followed by air or furnace cooling. Tempering can be done at 180-210°C, and the steel is then left to cool in the air. EN1A can also be hardened at 780-800°C, followed by quenching in oil or water, but this process is not recommended due to the material’s properties.
EN1A Leaded and Non-Leaded Hardening:
Hardening is not typically recommended for EN1A due to its lead and sulfur content.
EN1A Leaded and Non-Leaded Tempering:
EN1A can be tempered at 180-210°C and cooled in air.
